What 1.5-Inch Hail Does
Golf-ball hail tears shingles off. Inch-and-a-half hail is quieter: it bruises the shingle mat, strips granules, and leaves a roof that fails a year or two later, after the insurance window has closed. That is why the inspection has to happen now.
Inch-and-a-half hail fractures the fiberglass mat under the granules. The shingle looks fine from the driveway and starts leaking a year or two later, after the claim window has closed.
Granules are the shingle’s UV shield. Once hail knocks them loose, the asphalt underneath bakes and cracks. Check your gutters and downspout splash blocks for a fresh layer of grit.
Dings in roof vents, gutters, flashing, and AC fins are how an adjuster confirms hail size. If your gutters are dimpled, assume the shingles took the same hit.
Your insurance policy sets a window to report storm damage, and it is often shorter than you would expect. A dated, photographed inspection now protects that claim later.
